So why is there some questionable link between the two? With June Fashion Week wrapping up before the end of the month and the Olympics surge weeks away, let’s explore the connection between the two.
Paris is accustomed and equipped with every resource needed to host monumental events just like it has done with fashion week every year, Rugby World cup in 2023, Art Basel Paris Plus, Prix d’Amérique and more. Clearly when France won the bid on the 13th of September 2017 to host the Summer games from July 26 to August 11th 2024, the city went forward with infrastructure development and major plans for the incoming flux of athletes and spectators.
The Olympic Games will also rely on Paris’s landmarks and stunning views to host their events, minimal, if any interference with Paris Fashion Week should occur due to the events taking place a month apart and their extensive preparations in sustainability. The Paris Olympic Games takes pride in their attention to sustainability in the conversion of venues and iconic landmarks to host the games. These efforts speak to Paris’s ability to adapt and rise to the occasion of hosting such monumental, global events.
The “Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode” has listened to the concerns of frantic businesses and has moved the couture season up one week to take place from Monday, June 24 to Thursday, June 27, giving ample time and space before Friday, July 26, the start of the Games. As of February 26, 2024, Anna Wintour announced that the next edition of Vogue World will be held in Paris at Place Vendôme and will be dedicated to the Parisian Olympic Games, merging the world of fashion and athletics in a supportive harmony.
The big fashion houses that dominate Paris Fashion Week, such as Dior, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, etc. are aware of these changes and give full trust in the Ministry of Culture to successfully host the best of both events, knowing events of this magnitude have been handled swiftly by Paris before. The luxury goods company LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) is a proud Olympic sponsor spending about $162M, making it the “single largest local sponsor of Paris 2024”, proving that their involvement with both events will be a success and shine in their ways on different times.
While many businesses feared that the Olympic Games would interfere with Paris Fashion Week events, fashion designers and businesses alike are showing the community that both of the global occasions are to be celebrated in unity. After a period of uncertainty, brands are confirming one after another the dates when they will be present in Paris between June 18th through the end of the month.
