David Bowie, Mr Jones’ Long Hair: An Immersive Retrospective at Galerie MR8

Poster of Exhibition David Bowie at Gallery MR8 for rent in the Marais for Paris Fashion Week

From March 22 to June 22, Galerie MR8 is hosting an exceptional exhibition dedicated to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century: David Bowie. Titled “David Bowie, Mr Jones’ Long Hair”, this unique retrospective showcases over 70 rare and previously unseen photographs of the rock icon, captured by Philippe Auliac, a photographer and friend of Bowie for more than 35 years, as well as Michel Haddi and Denis O’Regan. More than just an exhibition, this event offers a total immersion into Bowie’s visual and artistic universe, exploring his aesthetics, influences, and multiple transformations.

A Journey Through Bowie’s Inspirations and Transformations

David Bowie was not only a brilliant singer and musician; he was a true artistic chameleon, drawing inspiration from a vast array of disciplines. The exhibition highlights the key figures who shaped his career: rock legends like Lou Reed, Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Iggy Pop, and Marc Bolan, visual artists such as Jean Cocteau, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Salvador Dalí, as well as literary influences including Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Oscar Wilde.

Through these diverse influences, the exhibition reveals how Bowie continuously reinvented his identity, from his early personas like Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane to his final masterpiece, Blackstar. Each photograph captures a moment in time, a style, and a personality that Bowie adopted throughout his career.

In addition to these striking images, visitors will have the rare opportunity to see one of the very first recordings of David Jones (his birth name), of which only two copies exist in the world. The experience will also feature an exclusive film showcasing a photoshoot by Michel Haddi, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at Bowie’s magnetic presence and artistic process.

A Unique Perspective: Terry Burns, the Forgotten Brother

The exhibition takes a distinctive narrative approach, shaped by David Lawrence, the event’s author and curator. He has crafted a retrospective told from the perspective of Terry Burns, Bowie’s half-brother. While little known to the public, Terry played a fundamental role in Bowie’s life and artistic evolution. It was he who introduced Bowie to jazz, Beat literature, and the political movements of the 1960s, helping to shape his creative universe.

Through a series of poignant texts, David Lawrence brings Terry Burns’ voice to life, shedding light on the lesser-known aspects of the brothers’ relationship. This approach adds emotional depth to the exhibition, showing how Bowie’s personal struggles influenced his work. Terry’s impact is particularly evident in songs like “All The Madmen,” which reflects his brother’s schizophrenia, and “Jump They Say,” inspired by Terry’s tragic suicide in 1985.

A Multi-Sensory and Immersive Experience

The exhibition goes beyond photographs and narratives. To create full immersion, a three-hour exclusive soundtrack, featuring the music David Bowie listened to and was inspired by, will accompany visitors throughout their journey. An exclusive fragrance, Poet of Berlin, has also been specially created for the event, adding a unique olfactory dimension to the experience.

Finally, a pop-up boutique will offer collectors’ items for fans:

  • Exhibition catalogues, including a collector’s edition limited to 500 copies featuring exclusive prints by Philippe Auliac,
  • Signed photographs by the featured artists,
  • Exclusive exhibition posters and tote bags.

A Must-See Event for Bowie Fans and Art Enthusiasts

Whether you are a devoted fan of David Bowie or simply curious to explore one of the most iconic figures in rock and pop culture, this exhibition presents a rare opportunity to delve into the artist’s rich and avant-garde universe. Through unseen photographs, immersive storytelling, and a carefully curated atmosphere, “David Bowie, Mr Jones’ Long Hair” promises to be one of the most memorable cultural events of the year.
