Moon Landing: 50 years

2019 July

The Moon, the moon, the moon.

Moon talk seems to be everywhere you look, but why all this hype over the moon?

During the night of July 20th to 21th 1969, and under the gaze of 600 million worldwide viewings, the American astronaut Neil Armstrong took the first steps on the moon saying “ That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.  50 years later, space quest continues to advance and the United States will launch the Artemis new program aiming to permanently settle people on our satellite and to send the first woman to the moon.

As this summer marks the 50th anniversary of man’s first step on the moon, Apollo 11 moons mission is inspiring art exhibitions, documentaires, events and fashion collections worldwide.

Kicking off with The Brooklyn Museum, honoring the famous fashion designer Pierre Cardin and his 1953 collection based on the moon landing, which was the first time in fashion an inspiration was in conjunction with the lunar conquest.  Dior’s current artistic director Kim Jones designed a futuristic fashion collection for the mens 2019 Pre-Fall season.  To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moonwatch, Omega launched “The Moon of Steel” collector.  Fast fashion has also taken part in the movement, with FOREVER 21 introducing a capsule collection based on colors that embody the mysterious side of this celestial body. The Parisian Grand Palais also dedicated an exhibition, which will wrap up until July 20th, to the Moon.  And on top of all of these tributes, July 16th the world whitenessed a half eclipse of the moon, which has only occurred 13 times in the XXIth century.
